Discrimination: It’s Against The Law

 

The NYC Human Rights Law is one of the most comprehensive anti-discrimination laws in the nation. This law aims to protect against discrimination based on gender and includes sexual harassment. The approval of the Stop Sexual Harassment in NYC Act (the “Act”) will help address and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace by emphasizing accountability. Let’s take a look at some of these changes:

  • Int. No. 693 - Effective July 8, 2018 City contractors will be required to include their practices, policies, and procedures “relating to preventing and addressing sexual harassment” as part of an existing report required for certain contracts pursuant to the City Charter and corresponding rules.

  • Int. No. 630 - Effective September 6, 2018 Every employer will be required to display anti-sexual harassment rights and responsibilities poster designed by the commission in break rooms and common areas. Additionally, an information sheet on sexual harassment must be distributed to all new hires.

  • Int. No. 632 - Effective April 1, 2019 – This amendment requires employers with 15 or more employees (including interns) to conduct annual anti-sexual harassment training for all employees, including supervisory and managerial employees. A signed employee acknowledgement must be received for record keeping.
